Hawaiian Storm Chase and Island Escape

was in Hawaii or some other beautiful chain of islands on vacation with a bunch of friends. We were all hanging out on the edge of one island on craggy rocks looking out into the water. It was dusk and sunset was coming soon. There were many small islands out in the water. We were going to go in and walked around to this other fun looking jump off cliff. On our way over we saw this storm start brewing above the next island over. Looked cool. Then it got scary fast - lightning and super dark came, then HUGE EXPLOSIONS on the ground, like someone setting off tnt or fireball hitting the island. Then was moving closer towards us, and really fast, so we jumped in and I thought the further out in the water I can get the better because this island is about to be blown up. Called to everyone on shore as I was swimming to get off the island and start swimming! Made it across the channel to this other island and could watch from there. I found two abandoned surfboards there so I floated on one and used one as cover for my head. Looking up, I was under this big rock overhang whcih I figured would either keep me safe or kill me if it fell off. Then everyone came and we all watched the storm move slowly to where we just were but it chilled out to only rain and little bit of lightning.
