Struggling with Trumpet at Church Event

Was at some church event and they asked me to play in the church band. I asked what they had open and they said trumpet so I said
I'd never played before but I'll give it a try. Spent next while trying
to get a note out but couldn't so said I was just going to watch
instead. There was a lot of good food and snacks around so I was eyeing
some as I got to my seat. Don't even know if I was there with anyone
else.
